I was originally going to write about the recurring use of the word "Indian" in the poems by Montezuma, but changed my mind upon reading the last poem. The recurring theme (and name of the poem) is "I have stood up for you." As I read this, I kept hoping that at the end "I" would be revealed, but nothing like this happens. Who do you think the "I" is in this poem?
I think this is a great question! I'm not sure I'm entirely sure of my answer, but I wonder if the poem is the individual Native American attempting to hold onto Native American culture and identity? The speaker says that through every type of adversity thrown at "you," they have stood up. "I" has not given up, has not forgotten who "you" is, or, possibly, what it means to be Native American.
