Forgive our Fathers

I think this scene in Sherman Alexie's Smoke Signals encompasses much of the family strife in Love Medicine. We see many fathers - and mothers - in it who are a bit of a mess. And they perpetuate problems throughout the generations.

  1. I enjoyed this almost stream of consciousness pondering the forgiveness of fathers. Forgiveness seems to have become a critical issue in the novel. I think we can also relate this to Marie's reaction to being left. She holds forgiveness in her heart and therefore reaches out toward her husband despite what is going on. In fact, I believe her strength might be in forgiveness.
