I liked Marie's story the best but was confused about the last paragraph on page 162:
"He stood there looking at me over that long, shiny space. It rolled and gleamed like a fine lake between us. And it deepened. I saw that he was about to take the first step, and I let him, but halfway into the roo, his eyes went dark. He was afraid of how deep this was going to become. So I did for Nector Kapshaw what I learned from the nun. I put my hand through what scared him. I held it out there for him. And when he took it with all the strength of his arms, I pulled him in."
What do you think Marie is talking about? I'm think there's a connection with Sister Leopolda but I'm not sure what Nector is afraid of. Also with this story, why do you think Zelda might want to become a nun after seeing the altercation between Sister Leopolda and her mom?
I think Marie is contemplating telling Nector that she saw his note about leaving her. She looks at him over the table, the "long, shiny space," and decides to give him the letter once he's half turned away, after he thinks everything will be OK. She follows Leopolda's example by forcing Nector's face into what he doesn't want to face. He takes takes the letter in his hands and it feels heavy because he feels guilt and regret. They both feared the distance that was growing between them.
ReplyDeleteI think Zelda wanting to become a nun was because of the dramatic scene that her mother and Sister Leopolda put on for her. She was a witness to this crazy power play mixed in with intense passion fueled by hate. I think she wants to hold power like that over someone or somehow possess whatever it is her mother and Sister Leopolda had. That was just a crazy weird scene.
