Home to Harlem

In Home to Harlem, Jake, a black deserter from World War I I believe, gets fed up with the fact that he isn't taking part in any battles or overtly violent activities and leaves the battlefront.  After spending a few weeks in England, he ultimately decides to return home to Harlem, a borough of New York City, in order to feel happy and chase after black and brown women.  He succeeds in this and ends up with a desirable "honey" the first evening of his return from Europe, but after repeated attempts to find the girl, he hasn't been able to find her.  Being the womanizer that Jake presents himself to be, he spends romantic time with other women as well, but he can't help but fantasize about that one girl that seduced him the night of his return.  As the reader, do you believe Jake's characterization with gain more momentum or remain at its simple stage of finding work and chasing women?
