In the novel, Jake consistently expresses his admiration
towards Ray’s knowledge of the wolrd and intelligent mind. In a passage he insist that “ Ef I was
edjucated, I could understand things better and be proper speaking like you”
(McKay 144). Jake figures with a mind
like his chappie Ray, he would be exposed to opportunities that are not accessible
to him, due to what he thinks to be a lack of intelligence. In reality, Ray felt as though he was a misfit,
trapped in some kind of cage. The scholar envied Jake’s ability to live free
and go through life in somewhat of an oblivion without any type of grievances
or social responsibilities. In response
to Jake’s covet towards Ray’s education and mind, Ray says “Anyway, you’re
happier than I as you are. The more I learn the less I understand and love
life. (McKay, 145). It seems as though the grass is much greener on the other side
for both of the comrades.
Who would you say is in better life circumstance, Jake with his lack of knowledge and proper
formal education or the discontented intellectual Ray?
I think those who have education have a better circumstances in life. Through education people could learn the down side of life, but it also gives people the opportunity to good things about life which can only be gained through experience of education. Jake in other hand, never had the privilege to learn and his only choice is to be oblivious to the problems or the goods things of the life.
