As many of you have mentioned, it is important to think about the role of Catholicism, and spirituality, in defining contemporary Indian identity (where many tribal members practice both tribally-specific religions and a form of Christianity).
St. Kateri Tekakwitha was the one I was thinking of, I guess I just hadn't put the two together (it's been awhile since I came across her in the book!) But here's some information on her from the Catholic organization website.

It's nice to know she set up ministries for Native Americans who were probably going what she went through when she changed faith!
