As I mentioned in class, this title gave name to a whole literary genres of narratives, from a variety of ethnic and racial backgrounds--stories "from the bottom up" (in opposition to stories "from the top down"). Historian Jim Barrett has an interesting article on this topic, which I'm posting now in Blackboard (week 4).
