About Indian boarding schools, in anticipation of future discussions

Our Spirits Don't Speak English: Indian Boarding School

"“Our Spirits Don't Speak English: Indian Boarding School" is a Native American perspective on Indian Boarding Schools. This DVD produced by Rich-Heape Films, Inc. uncovers the dark history of U.S. Government policy which took Indian children from their homes, forced them into boarding schools and enacted a policy of educating them in the ways of Western Society. This DVD gives a voice to the countless Indian children forced through a system designed to strip them of their Native American culture, heritage and traditions. “Our Spirits Don't Speak English: Indian Boarding School" has already captured an impressive array of awards." 1. I enjoyed the Native American Documentary, "Our spirits don't speak English." After watching the documentary, I learned the American government wanted to get rid of other cultures and customs by forcing people to learn "their" way of life. In the documentary they interview people, one particular person, Andrew, expresses his emotions growing up as a Native American and how hard it was for him to forget where he came from. The documentary illustrates Native Americans’ hardships. It is the first time, I’ve learned that Native Americans were forced into boarding schools, and forced to change their lives. I found it wretched but important to educate people about Native Americans hardships.
