Throughout the stories, the main topic
of interest was to be successful and to live in luxury. One way to achieve this
life was through money. Even though the wages that characters earned in the
story was unimaginable to our current cost of living. They seemed to be able to
continue to live and continue to fight to achieve their dream. There were
orphans, beggars, and foreigners in the story and all had little or no support
emotionally or economically, expect their will to fight to achieve their dream.
The odds were against them in every way as they were a minority, but they were
still able to achieve their dream. As I was reading these stories I was
consumed by a questions, “why is homelessness so prevalent in America?” to be
more specific why in Richmond? The condition to work now is greater than what
was before, and the government even supports homeless and unemployed. I
understand there might be emotional instability, but that shouldn’t be an
excuse. People from other countries come to America for opportunities to find
jobs and education and there are people who achieve their dreams.
